Tradescantia albiflora ‘Giant’ is a trailing cultivar of Tradescantia known for its larger, broadly lanceolate foliage. The leaves are typically green with white or cream striping depending on light levels, and can reach up to twice the size of common tradescantia. The plant produces long, vining stems that root easily at nodes and respond well to pruning for bushier growth. It is a fast grower under the right conditions and adapts well to container growing indoors.
Native to:
Tradescantia albiflora is derived from Tradescantia albiflora, native to tropical and subtropical regions of South America, particularly Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. In the wild, it grows as a groundcover in forested areas, rooting along creeping stems. The ‘Giant’ cultivar retains this growth habit but has been selected for larger foliage and a more vigorous appearance.
Water:
Water when the top third of the pot has dried out. While it prefers consistently moist soil during active growth, it is sensitive to overwatering. Allow water to drain freely and avoid letting the plant sit in water. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
Light:
Bright filtered or bright indirect light is ideal. Prolonged direct sunlight may bleach or scorch the foliage, especially the variegated sections. In lower light conditions, the plant may become leggy and lose some of its variegation.
Humidity:
Prefers moderate to relatively high humidity, but will tolerate typical indoor levels. Grouping plants together can help maintain ambient humidity, particularly in centrally heated rooms.
Temperature:
Best kept in temperatures between 18 °C and 24 °C.
