Phyllanthus urinaria variegated is a variegated form of the Phyllanthus urinaria species (commonly called “little leaf” or “gri‑gri plant”) that exhibits patches or streaks of pink, cream or pale coloration on its foliage. The variegation is not always stable, so light and humidity play important roles in maintaining the pattern.
Native to:
The wild Phyllanthus urinaria is native to tropical Asia but is now pantropical, found in warm regions around the world. The variegated form is a cultivated variation rather than a natural wild form.
Water:
Water thoroughly, then allow the top few millimetres of soil to begin drying before watering again. Avoid waterlogging soil or letting the plant sit in stagnant water. In active growth periods, maintain more moisture; in slower growth periods, reduce frequency.
Light:
Provide bright filtered to bright indirect light. Too little light may cause the variegation to fade, while direct sun can scorch the leaves or damage delicate variegated areas.
Humidity:
High humidity is beneficial for maintaining healthy growth and preserving variegation. Levels above ~ 70 % are recommended. In typical indoor environments, employ methods such as misting, humidity trays, or a humidifier. The plant is well suited for enclosed environments such as terrariums if space allows.
Temperature:
Maintain a warm environment of approximately 18 °C to 25 °C. Avoid letting the temperature drop below ~ 15 °C, and protect the plant from cold drafts or sudden thermal changes.
