Araucaria heterophylla, commonly known as the Norfolk Island pine, is an evergreen conifer appreciated for its symmetrical, tiered branches and soft, needle-like foliage. Despite its common name, it is not a true pine but belongs to the Araucariaceae family. Indoors, it typically reaches heights of 1.5 to 2 metres, making it a popular choice for adding a touch of greenery to interior spaces.
Native to Norfolk Island in the South Pacific, Araucaria heterophylla thrives in subtropical climates. In the UK, it is best grown as a container plant indoors or in a conservatory, as it is not frost-hardy and requires protection from cold temperatures.
Native to:
Norfolk Island, South Pacific.
Water:
Keep the soil evenly moist during spring and summer, allowing the top inch to dry out between waterings. In winter, reduce watering frequency, maintaining lightly moist soil. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some direct sunlight but avoid prolonged exposure to prevent needle scorch. Rotate the plant periodically to ensure even growth.
Humidity:
Requires moderate humidity levels. If indoor air is dry, especially during winter, increase humidity by misting the plant regularly or placing a humidifier nearby.
Temperature:
Thrives in temperatures between 18–24°C. Protect from temperatures below 10°C and avoid placing near cold drafts or heat sources.
