Begonia darthvaderiana ‘Green Spots’ is a striking begonia cultivar characterised by dramatically dark, velvety‑leaves marked with vibrant green spots and red‑tinged veins. The exact origin is unknown to us, but we believe it may be a hybrid with Begonia chloristica. The leaf surface is typically very deep brown or almost black, giving a rich background for the scattered bright‑green circular markings. The leaf shape tends to be asymmetrically winged (as common in begonias) with a softly scalloped margin and a noticeable red stem and petiole undertone.
Native to: The parent species, Begonia darthvaderiana, originates from Borneo in tropical Southeast Asia, which implies humid under‑storey rainforest conditions. The ‘Green Spots’ cultivar retains the dark foliage and compact habit of the original, but with additional spotting.
Water: Maintain the substrate lightly moist—never soggy—and allow the surface to become just slightly dry (for example the top third) before watering again. Avoid letting water pool on the leaves or around the crown, to reduce risk of rot.
Light: Provide bright filtered light. Direct midday sun should be avoided as it may scorch the velvety dark leaf surface.
Humidity: This cultivar thrives under high humidity, around 70‑80%. Because of its humidity requirement and the delicate leaf texture, it is especially suited for terrarium conditions rather than very dry indoor rooms.
Temperature: Keep indoor temperatures in the range of about 18‑26 °C. Avoid drops below about 15 °C and protect from cold drafts or hot dry air from radiators, which may cause the leaves to shrivel or the plant to “melt”.
Please note: This is a very sensitive species and is suited to collectors with experience growing tempramental Begonia.
