Anaphyllum wightii
🌿 Plant Care Tips
Anaphyllum wightii is a rhizomatous aroid from south-west India and the Lakshadweep Islands. It is a terrestrial species of evergreen and semi-evergreen forest, and current references treat it as native to the southern Western Ghats as well as Lakshadweep.
Anaphyllum wightii has a creeping rhizome and an upright growth habit, with long brownish petioles and leaves that are pinnatisect to pinnatipartite rather than entire. The leaf segments are usually elliptic to oblong with pointed tips, and the inflorescence has a deep brown spathe that twists once or twice around the spadix.
Native to: South-west India, especially the southern Western Ghats, and the Lakshadweep Islands. It grows as a terrestrial rhizomatous herb in evergreen and semi-evergreen forest. The plant has a creeping rootstock, upright leaf stalks, and divided leaves with 3 to 8 pairs of narrow elliptic to oblong lobes. The spathe is deep brown and twisted, which is one of its more distinctive features.
Water: Keep the compost evenly moist during active growth, but not stagnant or waterlogged. Let only the upper surface begin to dry slightly before watering again, rather than allowing a large part of the pot to dry out. Because it comes from moist forest habitat and grows from a creeping rhizome, it is likely to do best in a loose, airy mix that stays lightly moist. That moisture advice is an inference from habitat and growth form rather than a species-specific cultivation study.
Light: Bright filtered light is best. Give it a well-lit position with protection from strong direct midday and afternoon sun, which may scorch the divided leaves. A place near a bright window behind a sheer curtain suits it well. This recommendation is based on its forest habitat and general aroid behaviour indoors.
Humidity: Aim for around 60 to 75% humidity if possible. It should appreciate higher humidity, especially while producing new growth, but it also needs good air movement around the foliage and compost. Because this is a forest-floor species from humid regions and not a very large plant, it can also do well in a spacious terrarium or cabinet if ventilation is good. This humidity range is inferred from habitat rather than taken from a published cultivation protocol for the species.
Temperature: Keep it warm, ideally around 18 to 28°C, with a minimum of about 15°C. Avoid cold draughts and sudden temperature drops. Its native range in tropical south-west India suggests it prefers stable warmth indoors rather than cool conditions. That temperature range is inferred from origin and habitat, as species-specific indoor trials are not readily published.
