Opuntia jamaicensis ‘Jamaican Ghost’ is a striking prickly pear cactus from Jamaica, cultivated for its unusual ghostly white to grey pads. This cultivar is a form of Opuntia jamaicensis, a shrubby cactus species that typically grows to about 1 m tall, with flattened cladodes (pads) and sharp spines. The ‘Jamaican Ghost’ variety is especially noted for its pale variegation.
The plant produces bright yellow to orange flowers, often with reddish centres, followed by small pear-shaped red fruits. Pads are oval, usually 7–13 cm long, with glochids and spines that require careful handling
Native to:
Endemic to Jamaica, where the species grows in arid, rocky environments. The ‘Jamaican Ghost’ cultivar has been selected for its pale, ghostly variegation on its pads.
Water:
Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In spring and summer, water deeply but infrequently; in autumn and winter, withhold water entirely. Overwatering is the main cause of decline.
Light:
Requires strong, direct sunlight. A south-facing windowsill is ideal in the UK. Take care in the hottest months, as intense midday sun can scorch pads if ventilation is poor.
Humidity:
Prefers low humidity and dry air. No additional humidity is required indoors, and excess dampness can encourage rot.
Temperature:
Tolerant of warmth but should be kept above 4 °C. In the UK, it should be overwintered indoors in a bright, cool, and dry location to protect from frost.

Some plants such as Begonia may suffer slight leaf melt when shipped. This is normal and nothing to be concerned about.
All our plants are stores and/or grown in our nursery under LED lighting so they are in active growth when arriving with you.
The conditions in our nursery are a minimum of 60% humidity and 19C year round.
