🌿 Plant Care Tips

Philodendron ‘Prince of Orange’ is a self-heading hybrid philodendron grown for its vividly coloured new foliage. Unlike climbing types, it grows in a compact rosette form, with leaves emerging from the centre and gradually expanding outward. New leaves open in bright orange tones, maturing through copper and apricot shades before turning medium to deep green.

Philodendron ‘Prince of Orange’ remains relatively compact compared to many philodendrons, typically reaching around 45–60 cm in height and spread indoors. The leaves are broad, oval to elliptical, and glossy, with sturdy upright petioles that give the plant a structured appearance. Its non-vining habit makes it well suited to pots without the need for support, making it perfect for growing indoors in the UK.

Native to: This is a cultivated hybrid derived from tropical Philodendron species native to northern South America, particularly Colombia and surrounding regions. Its parent species naturally grow as understory plants in warm, humid rainforests.

Water: Water when the top third to half of the compost has dried out. Keep the soil evenly moist during active growth but never waterlog, as the roots are sensitive to sitting in saturated compost. Reduce watering slightly in winter while maintaining light moisture.

Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal to maintain strong leaf colour. It tolerates medium light levels, but growth may slow and new leaves may be less vibrant. Avoid prolonged direct sun, especially midday sun through glass, as it can scorch the foliage.

Humidity: Prefers moderate to higher humidity, ideally around 50–70%. It will tolerate average UK indoor humidity but benefits from increased moisture in the air, particularly in centrally heated homes.

Temperature: Thrives between 18–27 °C. Avoid temperatures below 15 °C and protect from cold draughts. Consistent warmth encourages steady growth and healthy leaf development.
