Dieffenbachia 'Camilla' is a popular indoor plant known for its striking variegated foliage and compact growth habit. Its broad, oval leaves are predominantly creamy white or light yellow in the centre, with dark green margins that create a beautiful contrast. As it matures, the plant develops a bushy form with thick, upright stems, making it ideal for adding vertical interest to indoor spaces. Dieffenbachia 'Camilla' is relatively low-maintenance and well-suited to a variety of indoor environments, including offices and homes.
Although easy to care for, it is important to handle Dieffenbachia 'Camilla' with care, as its sap can be irritating to the skin and toxic if ingested. This plant is best kept out of reach of pets and small children, but with the right conditions, it will thrive indoors, offering vibrant foliage throughout the year.
Native to
Dieffenbachia 'Camilla' is a cultivated variety of Dieffenbachia, which originates from the tropical regions of Central and South America. In the wild, these plants grow in the shaded understory of rainforests, where they enjoy indirect light and consistently high humidity. The indoor cultivar 'Camilla' is bred to be more compact and manageable, making it perfect for indoor settings.
Water
This plant prefers a consistent watering schedule, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly, but make sure the pot has good drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. During the winter months, you can reduce watering slightly as the plant’s growth slows.
Light
Dieffenbachia 'Camilla' thrives in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the delicate variegation on the leaves, while too little light can cause the plant to lose its vibrant colours and become leggy. It can tolerate low light, but placing it in a spot with medium to bright indirect light will keep its foliage vibrant and healthy.
Humidity
Moderate humidity levels around 50-60% are ideal for Dieffenbachia 'Camilla'. If the air is too dry, particularly in winter, placing it near a humidifier can help maintain its foliage. While it can adapt to average household humidity, higher humidity will encourage lusher growth and prevent the leaf edges from browning.
Temperature
This plant does best in typical indoor temperatures, ranging between 18-24°C. It should be kept away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, which can stress the plant. Avoid exposing Dieffenbachia 'Camilla' to temperatures below 15°C, as it is sensitive to cold and may develop leaf damage. Maintaining stable, warm conditions will promote steady growth.
