Selaginella cuspidata or Selaginella pallescens, is a species of “spike moss” (in the genus Selaginella) that exhibits dense, creeping growth of small scale‑like leaves. It tends to produce tight mats or cushions and prefers humid, sheltered conditions.
Native to:
This species is native to tropical or subtropical regions in the Americas (Central to South America), commonly found in humid forest understory or along shaded, moist rock faces and tree trunks.
Water:
Keep the substrate consistently moist but avoid waterlogging. The soil (or growing medium) should never dry out fully. Water thoroughly and frequently, ensuring excess water can drain away. In enclosed or very humid setups, watering can be somewhat reduced, but dryness is risky. Use lukewarm or room‑temperature water rather than cold water.
Light:
Provide bright indirect or filtered light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch or bleach the delicate foliage. Lower light levels are tolerated but may slow growth or reduce vibrancy.
Humidity:
High humidity is critical—ideally above ~ 70 %. In standard indoor air (especially heated homes), additional humidity support is needed (misting, humidifier, pebble tray, enclosure). Because of its humidity requirement, it is well suited for terrariums or vivariums.
Temperature:
Maintain a warm range of approximately 18 °C to 24–26 °C. Avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures below ~ 15 °C, and protect from cold drafts or sudden temperature fluctuations.
