Rhapidophora megaphylla is a unique, rare aroid plant noted for its large, paddle-shaped leaves that can grow up to 60 cm in length. The foliage is typically a deep, glossy green, providing a striking contrast against the plant’s vining stems. As a slow-growing climber, Rhapidophora megaphylla can be trained to ascend a support like a moss pole, where its large leaves can be displayed prominently in an indoor setting.
Native to: Rhapidophora megaphylla is indigenous to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, specifically Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, and Borneo. It is commonly found growing as an epiphyte or hemiepiphyte in the understory of dense forests, where it climbs trees to access more light. These regions are characterised by high humidity, consistent warmth, and filtered sunlight, which are key conditions that influence its growth habits.
Water: This plant thrives when the soil is kept consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water when the top 2-3 cm of the soil feels dry to the touch. During the active growing season in spring and summer, the plant will require more frequent watering. However, reduce the frequency in the cooler months to prevent root rot. Ensuring that the plant has well-draining soil is crucial to avoid water accumulation at the roots. This plant is more succulent than most Rhapidophora and can handlle periods of drought better.
Light: Rhapidophora megaphylla prefers bright, indirect light for optimal growth. Compared to other Rhapidophora it leans in preference to brighter light. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, this may slow its growth and result in smaller leaves. Avoid placing the plant in direct sunlight all day, as this can scorch the leaves, leading to unsightly damage.
Humidity: High humidity is vital for Rhapidophora megaphylla, ideally between 60% and 80%.
Temperature: This plant flourishes in warm temperatures between 18°C and 27°C. It is sensitive to cold and should not be exposed to temperatures below 15°C. Consistent warmth is key, so keep the plant away from draughts and sudden temperature changes.
