🌿 Plant Care Tips

Amydrium medium ‘Silver’ is a rare climbing aroid loved for its distinctive silvery mottling across deep green leaves. This cultivated form of Amydrium medium develops elongated, oval to lance-shaped foliage with a satin-like silver overlay between the veins. As the plant matures and climbs, the leaves can become more elongated and may develop fenestrations (natural splits), especially when provided with vertical support.

Juvenile leaves emerge lighter green with a soft metallic sheen before deepening in colour as they harden off. It is a hemiepiphytic species that naturally climbs tree trunks using aerial roots, and indoors it performs best when given a moss pole or similar structure. Its upright climbing habit and moderate growth rate make it perfect for growing indoors in bright rooms with stable warmth.

Native to:
Amydrium medium is native to tropical Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo and the Philippines. It grows in lowland and hill forests, climbing trees in humid rainforest environments. In its natural habitat it begins as a ground-growing juvenile before attaching to vertical surfaces and ascending toward brighter canopy light.

Water:
Water thoroughly when the top 1/3 of the substrate has dried. The compost should remain lightly moist but never waterlogged. Ensure good drainage, as the roots require oxygen and can rot in compacted or saturated soil. Reduce watering slightly during cooler, darker months in the UK when growth slows.

Light:
Provide bright filtered light. A position near an east- or west-facing window with sheer curtain protection is ideal. Avoid prolonged direct sun, especially midday sun, as it can scorch the leaves and fade the silver patterning. Too little light may result in slower growth and reduced fenestration as the plant matures.

Humidity:
Prefers humidity levels of 60–80%. It will tolerate average indoor humidity around 50%, but stronger growth and better leaf development occur with higher levels. Using a humidifier or grouping with other plants can help maintain stable conditions.

Temperature:
Thrives in temperatures between 18–28°C. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold draughts, which can cause leaf damage. Stable warmth supports consistent growth throughout the year.
