🌿 Plant Care Tips

Begonia incarnata is a scrambling, subshrubby begonia grown its large, asymmetrical foliage with a metallic sheen and contrasting veining. It forms fleshy, upright-to-arching stems and can become a substantial houseplant when given warmth, bright filtered light, and a free-draining mix.

Begonia incarnata is often described as “metallic leaf begonia” because the olive-to-deep green leaves can show a reflective gloss, with prominent darker (often purplish) veins and a noticeably hairy (hirsute) texture on leaves and stems; small pink flowers can appear in season under steady indoor conditions.

Native to: Mexico, where it grows in wet tropical biomes; this background helps explain why it prefers consistent moisture (but not waterlogging) and higher indoor humidity.

Water: Water thoroughly, then let the compost dry to around 1/3 of the pot depth before watering again. Aim for an even “lightly moist” rhythm rather than swings between saturated and bone-dry, and always empty any standing water from the saucer to protect the roots.

Light: Give bright filtered light (near a bright window with a sheer curtain, or set back from the glass). Avoid strong direct midday sun, which can scorch the leaf surface and dull the metallic look; if growth becomes stretched, it usually needs brighter (still indirect) light.

Humidity: Target 55–75% if you can, especially through the UK heating season, as drier air can lead to crisping edges and slower growth. A humidifier or a closed display cabinet works well; if you’re keeping it consistently above 70%, it’s better suited to a cabinet-style setup than a small terrarium because it can get tall and wide with time.

Temperature: Keep it in a warm, steady range of 18–24 °C, and avoid cold drafts. Try not to let it drop below 12 °C; prolonged cool conditions can stall growth and increase the risk of root problems.
