🌿 Plant Care Tips

Philodendron ‘Painted Lady’ is a stunning climbing hybrid aroid grown for its high-contrast foliage and colourful petioles. Believed to be derived from Philodendron erubescens parentage, this cultivar produces bright chartreuse to lemon-yellow emerging leaves that gradually deepen to green while retaining mottled, speckled patterning. The petioles are pink to reddish with darker burgundy flecking, and new growth often shows a soft blush before hardening off.

This is a hemiepiphytic climber that develops elongated, heart-shaped to ovate leaves with a pointed tip and smooth margins. As it matures and is given vertical support such as a moss pole, leaf size increases significantly and the variegation becomes more pronounced. It makes it perfect for growing indoors where stable warmth and bright filtered light can be provided year-round.

Native to: Cultivar of hybrid origin. Its parent species are native to tropical rainforests of north-western South America, particularly Colombia, where philodendrons grow as climbing hemiepiphytes in warm, humid forest understories. Emerging leaves are typically bright yellow-green with pinkish tones, maturing to green with lighter speckled variegation. Growth habit is upright and climbing when supported.

Water: Allow the top 1/3 of the potting mix to dry before watering thoroughly. The substrate should be free-draining and airy, ideally containing bark, perlite and coco coir or peat-free alternatives. Avoid keeping the compost consistently saturated, as this can lead to root rot. Reduce watering slightly during darker winter months in the UK when growth slows.

Light: Bright filtered light is ideal to maintain strong colour and compact growth. A position near an east- or west-facing window with sheer curtain protection works well. Avoid prolonged direct midday sun, which can scorch the lighter foliage. Too little light may result in slower growth and reduced variegation.

Humidity: Prefers 60–80% humidity but adapts to typical indoor levels if kept away from radiators and drafts. Higher humidity encourages larger leaves and smoother unfurling. As this is a climbing plant that can become substantial in size, it is not suited to terrariums.

Temperature: Best grown between 18–27°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold draughts or sudden temperature drops, which can cause stress and slowed growth.
