Chlorophytum orchidastrum ‘Fire Flash’ is a tropical evergreen perennial grown for its vivid orange leaf stems and midribs, which contrast boldly against its broad, deep green foliage. Unlike the more commonly known Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum), this species forms a compact rosette of paddle-shaped leaves and does not typically produce long arching runners with plantlets. The newest growth emerges with especially intense orange colouring at the base, which gradually matures while retaining its bright central vein.
Chlorophytum orchidastrum ‘Fire Flash’ is valued for its tolerance of typical indoor conditions and relatively low maintenance requirements. Its upright, clumping growth habit and structural foliage make it perfect for growing indoors in homes and offices in the UK, where it performs reliably with consistent care.
Native to: Tropical West and Central Africa, including countries such as Cameroon and Uganda. It grows naturally in warm, humid forest understories where it receives filtered light. The plant forms a basal rosette of broad, lanceolate to elliptic leaves, with vivid orange petioles and midribs that are most intense on newly emerging foliage.
Water: Water when approximately the top 1/3 of the growing medium has dried. Keep the compost evenly moist but never waterlogged, as overly wet conditions can lead to root rot. Reduce watering slightly during cooler months, ensuring excess water drains freely. Allowing the plant to sit in standing water should be avoided.
Light: Bright filtered light is ideal. It will tolerate moderate indirect light, but the orange pigmentation is strongest in brighter conditions. Avoid prolonged direct sun, especially during summer, as this can scorch the leaves and cause fading or brown patches.
Humidity: Average household humidity is sufficient. While it appreciates moderate humidity, it adapts well to typical indoor levels found in UK homes. Avoid placing it close to radiators or heating vents that may cause excessive dryness.
Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 18–27°C. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 12°C and protect from cold draughts. Stable indoor temperatures will support steady growth throughout the year.
