Cereus peruvianus 'Monstrosus', commonly referred to as the Monstrose Apple Cactus, is a unique cultivar known for its unusual, irregular growth pattern. Its distinctive twisting and knobby stems create an architectural appearance that makes it stand out in any collection. The plant is a slow-growing cactus, typically remaining compact for many years, making it well-suited for small spaces or desk displays. Over time, it can grow to considerable heights in ideal conditions, but its growth remains manageable in containers. The stems are a bluish-green colour, with pronounced ribs adorned with sparse, short spines.
This cactus is relatively low-maintenance and is ideal for growers who prefer a hardy plant that can tolerate some neglect. Its unusual form develops randomly, so no two plants look alike, offering an ever-evolving visual interest. It is also drought-tolerant, requiring minimal care once established, which makes it a great option for beginners or those with a busy lifestyle.
Cereus peruvianus 'Monstrosus' is native to arid and semi-arid regions of South America, particularly in Peru, Brazil, and Argentina. In its natural habitat, it grows in rocky soils and mountainous terrains where water is scarce.
Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between watering. During the growing season (spring and summer), water every 3–4 weeks, adjusting based on temperature and light conditions. Reduce watering significantly in autumn and winter when the plant goes dormant. Always ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.
This cactus thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sunlight. Place it near a south-facing window for optimal growth. If the light levels are too low, growth may become elongated, and the plant could lose its characteristic compact form.
Cereus peruvianus 'Monstrosus' prefers low to moderate humidity, typically around 30–50%. It does not require additional humidity and thrives in standard indoor conditions.
Maintain a temperature range of 18–26°C during the growing season. The plant can tolerate cooler conditions, down to 10°C, but should not be exposed to frost. Keep it away from cold draughts and sudden temperature fluctuations for optimal health.

All our plants are stores and/or grown in our nursery under LED lighting so they are in active growth when arriving with you.
The conditions in our nursery are a minimum of 60% humidity and 19C year round.
