Year of the Snake Plant: 5 Reasons We Love Sansevieria
The Snake Plant (Sansevieria) has been crowned the Houseplant of 2025, thanks to its resilience, striking form, and air-purifying qualities. Its timing also coincides perfectly with the Chinese Year of the Snake, making it a plant that’s both practical and symbolic.
Since starting GrowTropicals in 2020, Sansevieria have been one of our top-selling genera. Here are five reasons this plant continues to be a favourite among houseplant enthusiasts:
Tolerates Lower Night Temperatures
Unlike many other houseplants that are not native to the UK, Snake Plants are hardy and can tolerate cooler night temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius, making them ideal for homes or offices that experience slight temperature fluctuations.

Extremely Low-Maintenance
Sansevieria is famously easy to care for. Native to West Africa, they require minimal watering, adapt to a wide range of light conditions, and are largely pest-resistant. This makes it perfect for busy plant owners or those new to houseplants!
Architectural and Sculptural
The upright, sword-like leaves create a natural structure that enhances any space. Often a popular choice for commercial spaces, Snake Plants provide a striking vertical element that complements other décor. They also remain compact and upright, making them a great choice for a tight corner or slim windowsill.
Air-Purifying Qualities
Snake Plants contribute to indoor air quality by filtering out common toxins. Additionally, they use CAM photosynthesis, releasing oxygen at night and therefore making them suitable even for bedrooms.
Wide Range of Varieties
From classic green-striped leaves to silver, yellow-edged, or cylindrical foliage, there’s a Sansevieria for every taste. Our best-selling varieties include:
