Homalomena rubescens 'Stardust' is an attractive, tropical houseplant known for its large, heart-shaped leaves that display a stunning blend of deep green with speckles of silver. The leaves have a smooth texture and a slightly glossy finish, with a reddish tint to the undersides and petioles.
Native to:
Homalomena rubescens 'Stardust' is native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, particularly in regions of Malaysia, Borneo, and Sumatra. In its natural habitat, it grows in the shaded understory, where it thrives in high humidity and warm temperatures.
Water:
This plant prefers consistently moist soil, but it is essential to avoid waterlogging. Water Homalomena rubescens 'Stardust' when the top 2.5-5 cm of soil feels dry to the touch. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent the roots from sitting in water, which can lead to root rot. During the winter, reduce watering slightly as the plant's growth slows.
Light:
Homalomena rubescens 'Stardust' thrives in low to medium indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions, making it ideal for spaces that do not receive a lot of natural light. However, too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so it’s best to avoid placing it in direct sun.
Humidity:
This plant prefers high humidity levels, ideally above 60%. While it can adapt to average indoor humidity, it will benefit from regular misting or being placed in a more humid environment, such as a bathroom or near a humidifier. Its preference for high humidity makes it a good candidate for terrarium growth, particularly when it is smaller.
Temperature:
Homalomena rubescens 'Stardust' thrives in warm temperatures between 18°C and 27°C. It is sensitive to cold and should be protected from temperatures below 15°C. Keep it away from draughts and sudden temperature changes to prevent stress, which can lead to leaf yellowing or dropping.
