Drosera paradoxica, commonly known as the Paradoxical Sundew, is a captivating carnivorous plant that is a favourite among plant enthusiasts for its unique insect-trapping mechanisms and striking appearance.
This species features long, slender leaves covered in sticky, glandular hairs that secrete a glistening, dew-like substance to lure and ensnare insects, which it then digests to supplement its nutrient intake. Its remarkable ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils makes it an intriguing and low-maintenance addition to any indoor plant collection, especially for those interested in unusual and functional plant specimens.
Native to: Drosera paradoxica is native to the tropical regions of Northern Australia, particularly the Northern Territory. It grows in nutrient-deficient soils in wetlands and moist, sandy areas, where it relies on its carnivorous adaptations to obtain essential nutrients.
Water: Drosera paradoxica prefers consistently moist conditions. Use distilled or rainwater to avoid mineral buildup, as this plant is sensitive to the chemicals and salts in tap water. Keep the soil consistently damp but not waterlogged, mimicking the plant’s natural boggy habitat. A shallow tray of water under the pot can help maintain the required moisture levels.
Light: This Sundew thrives in bright, indirect light. It requires plenty of light to develop its characteristic sticky traps and vibrant coloration. A location with filtered sunlight, such as near a bright window, is ideal. Avoid direct midday sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves, but ensure it receives sufficient light to prevent etiolation.
Humidity: High humidity levels between 50% and 80% are beneficial for Drosera paradoxica. If the indoor environment is particularly dry, using a humidifier or placing the plant in a terrarium can help maintain the necessary humidity levels. Its natural habitat’s high humidity ensures the plant’s glandular hairs remain effective in trapping insects.
Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 18°C to 26°C for optimal growth. Drosera paradoxica can tolerate slight temperature fluctuations but prefers a stable, warm environment similar to its tropical native habitat. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 10°C, as this can damage the plant and inhibit its growth.
