Dendrochillum tenellum, commonly known as the 'Grass Orchid,' is a charming, compact orchid species recognised for its delicate, grass-like foliage and elegant sprays of tiny, fragrant flowers. The narrow, strap-like leaves resemble blades of grass, giving the plant a soft, grassy appearance. During its flowering period, it produces long, arching inflorescences that are densely packed with small, pale yellow to cream-coloured blooms. These flowers add a fine-textured, airy aesthetic to indoor spaces, and their slight fragrance is a subtle bonus.
This orchid is ideal for growing indoors due to its manageable size and relatively easy care requirements compared to other orchid species. Its unique growth habit and graceful appearance make it perfect for small spaces or as part of a collection, where its beauty can be admired up close.
Native to
Dendrochillum tenellum is native to the mountainous regions of the Philippines, where it grows as an epiphyte in cool, humid forests. In its natural habitat, it clings to trees and thrives in the high humidity and filtered light of the forest canopy. This epiphytic lifestyle makes it well-suited for indoor cultivation, especially in environments that mimic these conditions.
Water
The 'Grass Orchid' prefers to be kept evenly moist, but not soggy. Water the plant regularly, allowing the potting medium to dry slightly between waterings. As an epiphyte, it is important to ensure that water drains freely from the pot to avoid root rot. A well-draining orchid mix, typically composed of bark and perlite, works best for this plant.
Light
Dendrochillum tenellum thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can scorch the delicate leaves. A location near an east- or north-facing window is ideal, where it can receive ample light without the intensity of direct sun. If light levels are too low, the plant’s flowering may decrease.
Humidity
High humidity, ideally between 60-80%, is crucial for this orchid. If your indoor environment is dry, especially during the winter months, consider increasing humidity using a humidifier. Due to its size and humidity needs, Dendrochillum tenellum also makes an excellent candidate for growing in a terrarium, where moisture levels can be easily controlled.
Temperature
This orchid prefers cooler to intermediate indoor temperatures, ideally between 16-24°C. It is sensitive to extreme heat or cold and should be kept away from cold draughts or hot, dry air. Stable, mild temperatures that reflect its native cloud forest environment will help ensure healthy growth and regular blooming.

All plants are shipped in their plastic nursery pot unless otherwise stated.
Plant pot sizes can fluctuate +/- 1cm.
We recommend to always size up your decorative pot by 1-2cm larger than the stated plant pot size. For example if you are purchasing a 12cm plant, you should purchase a 14cm decorative pot to ensure it will fit correctly.
We pride ourselves on the love and care with give our plants. Our entire team are plant obsessives at heart and so we go above and beyond to care for the plants we have in stock.
That said, plants are living beings and may differ slightly from the photo provided unless otherwise stated. Small leaf imperfections may be present and won't be compensated for. Some plants such as Begonia may suffer slight leaf melt when shipped. This is normal and nothing to be concerned about.
All our plants are stores and/or grown in our nursery under LED lighting. The conditions in our nursery are a minimum of 60% humidity and 19C year round.
