Begonia rubida is a captivating species native to the limestone forests of Sarawak, Borneo. This erect, cane-like begonia can reach heights of just over 90 cm and is distinguished by its stiff stems and foliage that varies in shades of green and red-maroon, sometimes exhibiting contrasting vein patterns. The plant produces ruby-red flowers, adding to its ornamental appeal.
Native to: Sarawak, Borneo, particularly in the Kuching Division.
Water: Maintain consistently moist but well-draining soil. Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate a range of lighting conditions. Exposure to brighter light can enhance the red hues in the foliage, while lower light conditions may result in greener leaves. Protect from direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch.
Humidity: Thrives in high humidity environments, ideally between 60% and 80%. This preference makes it well-suited for terrarium cultivation, where humidity levels can be consistently maintained. Regular misting or the use of a humidifier can also help achieve the desired humidity levels.
Temperature: Favours warm conditions, with an optimal range between 22°C and 28°C. Growth may slow if temperatures fall below 10°C, and the plant may not survive temperatures under 5°C. Ensure indoor temperatures remain stable to promote healthy growth.
