The Geogenanthus ciliatus, with its striking dark, round leaves, is a captivating plant native to the humid tropical regions of Ecuador and northern Peru. Its foliage, which can develop a beautiful blue tint when kept in shaded conditions, adds a unique aesthetic to indoor plant collections. This species exhibits an herbaceous creeping habit, making it an excellent candidate for terrariums where it can spread and thrive in a controlled environment.
Native to: Geogenanthus ciliatus originates from the tropical rainforests of Ecuador and northern Peru. These regions provide the humid and shaded conditions that this plant naturally thrives in.
Water: This plant prefers to be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water thoroughly and ensure the soil remains damp, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. In a terrarium setting, it may require less frequent watering due to the naturally higher humidity levels.
Light: Geogenanthus ciliatus thrives in bright, indirect light to dappled shade. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can scorch the leaves, but the plant can tolerate lower light conditions if necessary. Optimal light conditions will help maintain the blue-tinted foliage.
Humidity: High humidity levels between 70% and 90% are ideal for this species. In drier indoor environments, use a humidifier or a pebble tray with water to maintain the necessary moisture levels. The plant is well-suited for terrariums where humidity is naturally higher.
Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 18°C to 26°C for best results. This plant does not tolerate cold well and should be kept away from temperatures below 15°C. It flourishes in the warmth and stable temperatures similar to its native tropical habitat.
