Cissus quadrangularis, also known as veldt grape, winged treebine, or devil's backbone, is a robust climbing succulent well-suited to indoor conditions, particularly for sunny locations. Characterised by its distinctive four-sided, fleshy stems and minimal foliage, it produces small greenish flowers and red berries in ideal conditions. Its succulent nature makes it relatively drought-resistant and ideal for busy plant owners who need a resilient indoor climber.
Cissus quadrangularis is native to tropical regions across Asia, Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula. It typically grows in arid and semi-arid environments, which is reflected in its succulent, water-retentive stems adapted to these climates.
This plant prefers the soak-and-dry method of watering. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings to avoid root rot, which can affect this succulent if overwatered. During active growth, water thoroughly when the top 5 cm (2 inches) of soil feels dry. Reduce watering in cooler months, allowing the soil to remain dry for longer periods.
Bright, indirect light is essential for Cissus quadrangularis to thrive. Place it near a south or west-facing window with filtered sunlight, as direct sun may scorch its stems. Aim for about 6 hours of indirect light daily to encourage healthy growth, though it can tolerate lower light with a slightly reduced growth rate.
As a succulent, Cissus quadrangularis is well-adapted to low humidity levels and doesn’t require additional moisture in the air. Standard household humidity (around 40%) is sufficient, making it versatile for typical indoor settings.
This plant grows best in warm indoor temperatures, ideally between 18-27°C (65-80°F). Avoid cold drafts, as temperatures below 15°C (59°F) can stress the plant. It can benefit from occasional outdoor time during warmer months, but be sure to bring it inside once temperatures drop.
