Philodendron linnaei is an epiphytic aroid native to the tropical rainforests of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. This species exhibits a "bird's nest" growth form, with its rosette of leaves collecting organic debris, which aids in moisture retention and nutrient acquisition. The leaves are olive green on the upper surface and purplish-red underneath, adding a distinctive colour contrast. Notably, P. linnaei produces runners—elongated stems that extend from the main plant, facilitating vegetative propagation and allowing the plant to colonise new areas.
Native to: Philodendron linnaei originates from the tropical rainforests of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, where it thrives as an epiphyte in light shade.
Water: Maintain consistently moist soil by watering when the top inch feels dry. Avoid waterlogging, as this can lead to root rot. During the growing season, typically spring and summer, more frequent watering may be necessary, while in autumn and winter, reduce watering to prevent over-saturation.
Light: Place in bright, indirect light to encourage healthy growth. While it can tolerate lower light levels, insufficient light may result in leggy growth and smaller leaves. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity levels, ideally between 40-60%. To maintain this, consider placing the plant on a tray of pebbles filled with water or using a humidifier, especially during the drier months.
Temperature: Thrives in typical indoor temperatures ranging from 15°C to 24°C. Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes, as these can stress the plant.
