Epipremnum giganteum is a robust climbing plant from the Aroid family, known for its large, glossy green leaves that can reach impressive sizes under the right conditions. Although closely related to the popular Epipremnum aureum (Golden Pothos), this species tends to grow larger and has a more striking upright and spreading growth habit. In an indoor setting, E. giganteum grows well when provided with adequate support, such as a moss pole or trellis, to encourage its climbing nature. With its tolerance for a variety of indoor conditions, E. giganteum is a durable choice for indoor plant collections, where it can develop into a striking specimen.
Native to:
Epipremnum giganteum is native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, particularly in regions like Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. In the wild, it climbs tree trunks and thrives in the dense understorey, making use of the humid, warm environment to grow rapidly.
Water:
This plant prefers consistently moist soil but should never be waterlogged. Allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. During the winter months, water more sparingly, as the plant's growth will slow down.
Light:
Bright, indirect light is ideal for Epipremnum giganteum. It can tolerate lower light conditions but will grow more slowly and may lose some of its vibrant colour. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can cause leaf scorching.
Humidity:
High humidity levels, ideally above 60%, are recommended for optimal growth. If humidity drops below this, consider misting the plant regularly or placing it near a humidifier. For smaller specimens, a terrarium is a suitable environment due to the higher humidity.
Temperature:
This plant thrives in typical indoor temperatures ranging from 18°C to 27°C. It should be protected from cold drafts and kept away from temperatures below 15°C, which can cause stunted growth or damage to the leaves.
