Plant Care 101: Your Orchid Care Questions Answered by Experts!
Back in May at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024, we invited you to ask our team of Orchid Conservation experts from Chicago Botanic Gardens your burning questions. They had a blast answering them on Instagram, and we thought their information was so useful that we should share it with our blog readers too!
What are the best conditions for growing Orchids in my home?
An ideal spot for your Orchids would be a sunny spot with sufficient lighting, either from a window or grow light. These plants appreciate small amounts of direct light early morning or late afternoon.
Water little and often, do not allow it to sit in water or for the soil to completely dry out. Up your watering in the growing season.
In Winter, position your orchid in bright light to encourage flowering, in Summer be careful not to expose your Orchid to too much sun as it can scorch the flowers.
When it comes to humidity, normal humidity is sufficient. We would suggest keeping your Orchids away from draughts and radiators.
Are there any heavily scented Orchids that are also easy-care?
Yes, several easy-to-care-for Orchids are known for their delightful fragrances. Dendrobium Orchids, for instance, emit a fruity and sweet scent, making them a popular choice for indoor growers. Cattleya Orchids are also notable for their variety of scents, which can range from sweet and citrusy to even chocolatey.
Can you grow Orchids in water?
Yes, certain Orchids can be grown in water. Some species naturally thrive in boggy or aquatic conditions, making water culture a viable option. Semi-hydroponics is a great transitional method from traditional orchid media to water.
However, it's important to research your specific Orchid species to ensure it can adapt to water culture and receives the right balance of nutrients.
I've seen some people put ice in their Orchids... is this a good idea?
Never! Despite its prevalence online, using ice cubes to water Orchids is not recommended. In their natural habitats, Orchids are not exposed to icy conditions. Instead, water your Orchid thoroughly when its roots appear silvery and dry, allowing it to drain completely before returning it to its decorative pot. Clear pots are great for monitoring root health.
How can I ensure the blooms on my Orchid last a long time?
Regular feeding with a balanced orchid fertiliser supports healthy growth and vibrant flowers. Position your Orchid in a sunny spot with indirect light to mimic its natural environment.
Additionally, pruning old blooms promptly encourages the plant to direct energy towards producing new flowers.
