winter-stems-trio
Winter Stems Trio

Three plants that are all about structure once the leaves have gone. Acer palmatum 'Bi Hoo' is a Japanese maple whose bare branches turn bright yellow in winter. Cornus 'Winter Beauty' sends up stems that glow orange at the base, shading to red at the tips. Miscanthus 'Strictus' is a tall, upright grass with yellow-banded leaves in summer that fades to straw and stands through winter.

Two of these drop their leaves in autumn, and that is the point: the coloured stems are the winter show. Plant them where low sun catches them, in sun or part shade with soil that stays moist but drains well. Cut the grass back in early spring, and prune some of the dogwood stems each spring for the brightest colour the following winter.

All three are fully hardy in the UK. The dogwood and grass are rated RHS H6, and the maple H5.

What's in the bundle:

Acer palmatum 'Bi Hoo' (19cm / 3L)

Cornus sanguinea 'Winter Beauty' (17cm / 2L)

Miscanthus sinensis Strictus (17cm / 2L)

Want a garden that still looks good when the leaves have gone?
