From November to March, when almost nothing else dares, its bare stems carry dense clusters of dark pink buds opening to tubular pink flowers that fade softly to white, and the scent is extraordinary: a rich, sweet perfume with notes of clove that drifts metres from the plant on a mild winter day. Raised at Bodnant in Wales in the 1930s, it holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Hardiness and seasons. Rated H6, hardy to around -20C, it grows anywhere in the UK, exposed or sheltered. The flowers themselves are notably frost-resistant for a winter bloomer; a hard frost can brown open clusters, but more buds follow. Bronzed young spring foliage matures dark green and turns orange and yellow in autumn.

In the garden. Plant it where winter takes you anyway: beside a door, a path or the bins, so the scent is unmissable on cold mornings.
