It is sold as winter hardy, and we class it as H5, to around -15C. Flowers open from October or November into January, a valuable source of nectar for winter bees, and blue-black berries can follow. The leaves are spiny but much softer than on most mahonias.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhere it fits.\u003c\/strong\u003e This is a true shade plant. Give it a north- or east-facing spot in humus-rich soil that stays moist. At about 1 to 1.5m after ten years, it suits a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/growtropicals.com\/collections\/plants-for-shade\"\u003eshady border\u003c\/a\u003e, a woodland edge or a large pot by a north-facing door.
