Its thick, intensely blue leaves are edged with a wide margin that opens a warm gold in spring and matures to cool creamy white as summer goes on, giving the plant a fresh, ever-changing look. Named Hosta of the Year in 2010, it is a compact, dependable variety that holds its good looks right up to the first frost.

It is fully hardy, rated RHS H7, and shrugs off the coldest British winters. As a deciduous, herbaceous perennial it dies back to a dormant crown each autumn and returns every spring, the seasonal rhythm we explain in our hardy exotics guide. The thick substance of the leaves also gives it useful resistance to slugs and snails, a real plus in this pest-prone group.

How and where to grow

Position: partial to full shade, sheltered from hot afternoon sun which can scorch the leaves and fade the colour.

Soil: fertile, humus-rich and moist but well-drained; enrich with leaf mould or compost before planting.

Size: a neat medium hosta, reaching around 35 to 45cm tall and 80 to 100cm across.

Hardiness: fully hardy across the UK (RHS H7), needing no winter protection.

Water well through the first two summers to establish the clump, then mulch each spring.
