This long-established early-flowering selection opens weeks ahead of the ordinary species: from November in mild, sheltered gardens, and usually in bud or bloom over the festive period once the clump is established. The flowers are classic Christmas rose: pure white cups with a lime-green eye and a boss of golden stamens, lasting for months and ageing to soft green-pink, over leathery dark evergreen-ish foliage.

Hardiness and seasons. Rated H7 by the RHS, the top hardiness band: unbothered below -20C, with the flowers themselves shrugging off frost and snow. It carries the RHS Plants for Pollinators mark, feeding winter-foraging bees when almost nothing else does. All parts are harmful if eaten and the sap can irritate skin, so gloves on and keep it from pets and children.

In the garden. Compact at around 25cm, perfect for doorstep pots, the front of shaded borders and under deciduous shrubs.
