In autumn the neat, oval leaves turn fiery red, orange and yellow, one of the brightest autumn shows of any shrub that stays this compact for so long.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHardiness and seasons.\u003c\/strong\u003e It is rated H5 by the RHS and holds the Award of Garden Merit, so it is hardy to around -15C across most of the UK. It is deciduous: bare from late autumn to spring, in flower in May and June, then green through summer until the autumn colour arrives.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhere it fits.\u003c\/strong\u003e This is an acid-soil plant, a close relative of rhododendrons and pieris. Give it lime-free soil, or ericaceous compost in a large pot, and a sheltered spot in sun or light shade.
