In June the branches are layered with flowerheads, each ringed by four large creamy white bracts that sit along the horizontal branches like a fall of late snow. The Chinese form is prized for its free-flowering habit and slightly larger bracts than typical kousa.

Hardiness and seasons. Rated H6 by the RHS, hardy to around -20C, it is reliable throughout the UK. The June bracts are followed in late summer by hanging, deep pink, strawberry-like fruits, which are edible when fully ripe, with a sweet, custard-like pulp, and in autumn the pointed, wavy-edged leaves turn crimson and purple.
