This mound-forming evergreen is prized for its felted, silver-grey oval leaves, neatly edged in white, which catch the light all year and set off every plant around them. In summer the whole mound is topped with sprays of bright yellow daisy flowers, giving you the best of both worlds: superb silver foliage and a generous, cheerful bloom.

Hailing from the coast of New Zealand, it is built for hot, dry and exposed positions where softer plants sulk. It is genuinely hardy across most of the UK, rated RHS H4, and its real strength is shrugging off wind, salt and drought. The single thing it resents is sitting cold and soggy: damp, freezing winters and heavy, sodden clay packed around its roots are what let it down, far more than any dry cold. On poor, sharply drained ground in full sun it is as easy and rewarding as shrubs come.

How and where to grow

Position: full sun, the more open and exposed the better.
