Its narrow, pointed oval leaves are speckled pink and green and finished with a deep green margin, held on short stems that fill out into a neat, bushy clump. Like the rest of our Aglaonema range, it shrugs off the odd missed watering and settles quickly into ordinary room conditions.

Origins

Chinese evergreens belong to the arum family and come from the warm, shaded forest floors of tropical Asia, from northeast India across to New Guinea. 'Minty Ice' is a modern cultivated selection from a compact, small leaved Aglaonema line rather than a wild species. That forest floor background explains why it copes with less light than most colourful houseplants, and why cold is the one thing it will not forgive. It sits comfortably alongside the other aroids in a mixed collection.

Care

Bright, indirect light keeps the pink speckling at its strongest. It will put up with a shadier corner, but the colour softens in deep shade, and hot direct sun scorches the leaves. Let the top few centimetres of compost dry before watering and never leave it standing wet, as soggy roots are the usual way to lose one. Normal room humidity suits it. Keep it warm, above 15C, and away from cold draughts and chilly winter glass. The sap contains calcium oxalate crystals, so place it out of reach of pets and small children. Its size makes it an easy fit among our small plants and one of the more forgiving houseplants for a first collection.
