Native to the mountains of south east Australia, it forms an elegant evergreen shrub with arching, weeping branches densely set with tiny triangular grey-green phyllodes, wreathed in late winter and early spring with masses of fragrant golden pompom flowers. It has real architectural presence, perfect for bringing a soft, exotic elegance to a sheltered sunny wall or courtyard.

Although it is one of the hardier wattles, tolerating around -5C in coastal and milder gardens, what it really cannot cope with is cold and winter wet together. Roots left waterlogged in freezing soil, more than frost itself, are what kill this species, so a warm, sheltered spot with sharp drainage makes all the difference. Grown well it rewards you with a haze of scent and colour just as the rest of the garden is waking up.
